FC Eindhoven v Fortuna Sittard |
One day before an important World Cup
2010 qualifier, Voices in Football took the opportunity to check out
the second tier of football in the Netherlands. With Holland
playing the following evening Friday night saw a full card of Dutch
second division fixtures.

After
quickly storming into a two goal lead through goals from local hero
Kevin Diaz, merger threatened Fortuna Sittard came racing back to win
the league fixture by 4 goals to 2. For a fixture that
felt low key, rural and as far away from PSV Eindhoven and the
Phillips Stadion as you could get the quality of goals was of a high
standard all be it that both teams were struggling at the foot of the
division.

A
crowd of around 3,500 comprising of around 300 Fortuna Sittard fans
enjoyed a fine early spring night game at generous prices.
A match ticket cost only 11 euros and they were available at the
turnstile on the evening of the game with no club membership card
required. Interestingly, whilst the Amsterdam Arena
prides itself on its high tech credit card non-cash matchday retail
system so a similar non-cash system was in operation at the Jan
Louwens Stadia. This time however goods such as beer and crisps
could only be purchased through small branded paper ticket bought
through a portocabin inside the ground. All in all, this and
the fact that most of those in attendance were teenagers with dads,
it did all feel like the school sports day all over again.
Kevin
Diaz, Kevin Diaz!!! Kevin Diaz....Kevin Diaz!!
