Porto v Chelsea: UEFA Champions League 25th November 2009 FC Porto was founded in 1893 by António Nicolau d´Almeida a fine sportsman
and an expert Oporto Wine trader. The founders of the club were men
strongly determined to engender a symbol, an emblem and an icon upon
which future generations of footballers and supporters could pride itself on.
The remarkable
initiative of these founders is still remembered and expressed at the highest level of football. Blue and white were the colours
chosen as meaning of pureness, calmness and stillness of mind and the club still play in these colours today.

F.C.
Porto aim was to evolve its purposes to national success but with global
goals. In the first club emblem the symbol was a football ball with
the F.C.P. club initials emblazoned on it. Twenty years later the Oporto
city shield became a vital part of F.C. Porto badge.

The 1980's were
probably the most memorable decade for the side thanks in part to Fernando Gomes and a host of other legends. In 1987 Porto won the European
Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and the European Super-cup. As
football in Europe has evolved so conquests have continued with
success in the UEFA Cup during the season 2002/03 and in the UEFA
Champions League in 2003/04 and later the Intercontinental Cup also
in 2004.
FC
Porto are then an internationally lauded team worldwide.
Domestically they hold the best record of five titles in a row,
having won the Portuguese Liga 24 times. Other titles won by the club
include the Portuguese Cup 18 times and Portuguese Supercup 16 times
(58 national titles).
