Académica de Coimbra visited Porto in this week Liga Sagres.
Académica
de Coimbra or as they are often called 'Académica' is a professional football organization based in the ancient city of
Coimbra, Portugal. The team was created inside of the students'
union of the University of Coimbra - the Associação Académica de
Coimbra. Its foundation as a students amateur sports association
dates back to 1876 and it is effectively one of the oldest sports
institutions in Portugal.

The
club is claimed by its fans to be ranked fourth by its number of
supporters after Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal and FC Porto.
They are a sports club emotionally and historically related to the
university life; through generations many students have become
lifelong supporters of the team. One of the main supporters groups are Mancha Negra

The
main football team uses the Estádio Cidade de Coimbra which was
specially rebuilt and modernized for the Euro 2004 with 30,000 seats.
Switzerland against England took place at the ground. The team
has the nickname of Briosa. Brio
is a Portuguese word derived from the celtic Brivos, which has a
cross meaning between Pride and Excellence; benefitting of both a place of learning and the football team.

They
are also known as Equipa dos Estudantes or The Students Team.
